SCIENCE FACTS: How scientists make slides of specimens... 1They stain the specimen so it shows up really clearly under the microscope.A stain is a special dye that colours certain chemicals and shows up certain parts of the tiny object the scientist is looking at. A commonly used stain is cochineal - made from ground beetles!
2Cut a thin slice of the object. That's so that the light can shine through it from below and you can see it clearly under the microscope. How thin? Well about one thousandth of a millimetre (one micrometre) will do. Scientists use a tool called a microtome to do the cutting - and i expect very mean scientists use it to cut cake.
3They place the specimen on a glass with a drop of water to stop it drying out and a thin piece of glass called a cover slip to protect it. Or if they want to store the specimen they might cover it in glycerine and gelatine and seal the edges og the cover slip with the gum arabic to stop it from drying or rotting.
